Library as the New Extension Service: Going Where the User Is
Traditional library outreach has focused on activities that encourage users to visit the physical library or, more recently, to use its website. Reinvented outreach goes beyond these marketing activities by putting the library and its services into the physical and virtual spaces where users already spend time. In this session, we'll explore a near-future where academic libraries exist everywhere that they are needed: within classroom buildings, dormitories, and faculty office buildings; within e-mail clients, feed readers, and social networking sites; and on PCs, cell phones, and iPods.

Speakers

Brian Mathews, Reference and Subject Librarian, Georgia Institute of Technology
Sending Mixed Messages: Repackaging the Value of the Library
This session will focus on "repackaging" traditional library services to fit within the context of the social web. Using patron segmentation and a mixed media approach, libraries can deliver targeted messages and offer customized services. Learn about a marketing framework that can communicate your value and extend reference, instruction, and outreach opportunities.

Elizabeth Killingsworth, Interim Head, Information Literacy and Outreach Department, University of Central Florida
Corinne Bishop, Information Literacy Librarian, University of Central Florida
Successful Outreach and Partnerships: The QEP and Information Fluency
Learn about the online information literacy modules project, a partnership between the Library and Course Development and Web Services (CDWS) at the University of Central Florida. Our project began as a product of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP topic, Information Fluency, was successfully proposed by the library and accepted by the university. The information literacy modules will provide students with the opportunity to learn information literacy skills online using a state-of-the-art system that provides content, practice and assessment to ensure that learning has taken place.

Barbara Lewis, Outreach Librarian at the University of South Florida
Helping Student Athletes Reach Their Goals at the Library
The speaker will discuss the USF Tampa Library's Outreach Program for student athletes. Included in the presentation will be an overview of the development of the current and planned student athlete instruction program and the use of athletes in the Library's READ poster program.

Interactive Panel Discussion with Next Gen Librarians
Future directions for library outreach, the value of user-based services, strategies for remaining central to campus life.
Three students, selected via a formal sponsorship process, will share their thoughts and solicit audience participation.
