Library People: Appointments, Departures, Promotions Carol Ann Borchert has been given the job assignment as the new Latin American and Caribbean Studies librarian. Derrie Perez, Interim Director, has been appointed Recorder/Secretary of the REFORMA, the national association for library services to the Spanish speaking. People: Awards, Degrees, Grants On January 21, 2000, Jim Vastine and Jana Futch, Reference Department, received awards from the Multicultural Graduate Programs Office in the Office of Graduate Studies. The awards were in recognition and appreciation of dedication of time and energy over the last ten years in support of graduate-level multicultural programs. People: State/National Activities Derrie Perez, along with Laurie Linsley, from Seminole Community College and Terry Walton, from Ft. Myers, recently traveled to Havana, Cuba as a member of the first official delegation of United States librarians from around the nation to visit Cuba. While in Cuba, Dr. Perez and the other delegates, confered with librarians of the Biblioteca Nacional Jose Marti and the University of Havana Library School. In October 1999, Sonja W. Garcia, Asst. Director Human Resources, traveled to South Africa as member of The Links, Inc., delegation. The delegation visited South Africa to dedicate ten (10) schools in rural townships which their organization built in cooperation with IFESH (International Foundation for Education and Self Help). The Links, Inc., which is a national women's organization with an international component to its service initiative, has also agreed to assist with teacher training and continued provision of school supplies. While in South Africa, Ms. Garcia visited E. G. Malherbe Library at the University of Natal, Durban. Carol Ann Borchert and Marilene Riemer attended a conference at University of California Berkeley entitled Challenges in Brazil: a Dialogue on February 25, 2000. The conference examined issues facing Brazil as it becomes part of the global economy while facing its own internal social issues. Participants in the conference included political leaders as well as heads of government and labor organizations from Brazil and the United States. Cecilia Poon and Jana Futch, Reference Department, presented a Table Talk on the topic of Mentoring in Academic Libraries at the Big 12 Plus Diversity Now Conference in Austin, TX on April 3, 2000. Stephanie Race, Florida Distance Learning Reference and Referral Center, presented "Providing Library Service at a Distance" at the 11th annual meeting of the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications - Distance Learning in Higher Education: New Policies, Partnerships and Practices on November 5, 1999 in Portland, Oregon. Ms. Race also presented "Emerging Trends in Library Services for Distance Learning" at the American Society for Information Sciences' 1999 Annual Conference held on November 2, 1999 in Washington, D.C. News from the Field: Acquisitions, Programs, Services Judy Keeth, John Keeth, and Maggie Doherty attended the Guadalajara International Book Fair, Guadalajara, Mexico, from November 27, 1999-December 1, 1999, on behalf of the Library. USF's Colodny Collection has been renamed the Research Collection on the Nixon Presidency. A collection of primary research materials pertaining to the Watergate scandal, the Colodny Collection was originally named for Len Colodny, author of the book the Silent Coup, who donated the material to USF in 1999. The new title for the collection better reflects the scope and content of the materials that are available. USF has agreed to share the resources and information contained in the Research Collection on the Nixon Presidency with the Gerald R. Ford Presidental Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan. USF recently received a letter of gratitude from former President Gerald R. Ford, thanking the University of South Florida for sharing this historically significant documentation with the Ford Library. The Louis de La Parte Florida Mental Health Institute represented the University at the Spring 2000 Internet2 Member Meeting in Washington, DC, March 28-29. The demonstration project is part of meritorious applications for the National Science Foundation Advanced Networking Infrastructure and Research grant. The Institute's Computer Support Center, Research Library, and Media Center have collaborated to digitize significant portions of the Institute's video archive concerning mental health issues. The target is to make available 100 hours of streaming video in three formats: 1,000 kb (Internet2), 250kb (LAN), and 56kb for home modem users as prt of a video archive database (an online catalog with a viewer interface). South Florida People: Appointments, Departures, Promotions Jane Bancroft Cook Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Sara Barnett to the position of Director of Information and Access Services. Sara comes with many years of experience in academic and special libraries. She received her M.L.S. from the University of Pittsburge and also received an M.A. from St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. University of
