People: Appointments, Departures, Promotions

Elaine Bay was recently welcomed as the new Information Services Librarian at Borland Health Sciences Library on the Jacksonville campus of the Health Science Center. She received her MLIS from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and comes to UF from the Jacksonville Public Library.

Amy G. Buhler recently joined the Reference Department as an Instructor University Librarian. She formerly worked as a graduate research assistant at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Library in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, while pursuing her degree at UNC, Chapel Hill. Like Ken Wells above, she worked as a student assistant in the Smathers Libraries before selecting librarianship as a career.

Congratulations to Sandra Canham on her promotion to Education Coordinator at the Borland Health Sciences Library on the Jacksonville campus.

Congratulations also to Tara (Tobin) Cataldo on her promotion to Assistant University Librarian and Reference Team Leader.

Myra Sterrett has left her position as Deputy Director of the HSCL to take on a new role as the Director of the Santa Fe Community College Library.

Dr. Michele Tennant has left the Reference and Cataloging Departments to join the staff of the UF Genetics Institute as their BioInformatics Librarian. Her office will remain in the HSCL.

People: Papers, Publications, Presentations

"Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database," a book review by Peggy Hsu, Associate University Librarian, was published in the Journal of the Medical Libraries Association in January 1990.

Pamela Sherwill-Navarro, Reference, and Addajane Wallace were awarded the third place Medical Libraries Association South Central Chapter Award for their poster Impact of Articles Reporting Research on the Value of Medical Library Services to Critical Care.

People: State/National/International Activities

Michele Tennant was invited by NCBI in Washington D. C. to participate in a project with a group developing an education program on NCBI resources for advanced librarians and beginning researchers. The program includes educational materials and a 40-hour course.

News from the Field: Acquisitions, Programs, Services

Nancy Schaefer, Reference, and Linda Butson, Public Services, taught Public Health workers in the Big Bend (FL) AHEC how to access health information on the Web February 7-8, 2002. These education courses have been approved for CE/CME credits for health professionals.

February 6, 2002 HSCL hosted the MLA satellite teleconference entitled "Sync or Swim: Managing the Flood of PDAs in Health Care." In attendance were HSCL Librarians Linda Butson, Barbara Francis, Amy Buhler, Rae Jesano and Tara (Tobin) Cataldo. Peggy Hsu acted as Site Coordinator, and Bill Kuntz, Assistant Director for Systems, served as Technical Coordinator.

December 4-5, 2001 HSCL, along with the Genetics Institute and the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology, sponsored an NCBI Training Session entitled "A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Resources Instruction for Scientists, Researchers, Graduate Students and Clinicians." Dr. Michele Tennant, BioInformatics Librarian, coordinated this event.

October 19, 2001 HSCL hosted a SOLINET workshop entitled "The Invisible Reference Desk." In attendance were Reference Librarians Tara Tobin, Pamela Sherwill-Navarro, Nancy Schaefer, Sandra Canham, Rae Jesano and Peggy Hsu.
