University of Central Florida

People: Appointments, Departures, and Promotions

Roger Simmons (Head, Media Services) retired on February 2, 2006. Roger joined the library faculty in 1990. During his time at UCF, he was promoted to manager, and then Circulation Services Head. He served as Acting Director of the UCF Libraries in 1996-1997. Roger's 30 year library career included service at the libraries at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), Indiana University (Bloomington), Chicago State University, and Northwestern University Law School.

Marcus Kilman has been appointed Head of Circulation Services. Marcus joined UCF as a reference librarian in 1996 and worked at the Orlando campus and at UCF's regional campus at Cocoa.

Phyllis J. Hudson will be awarded Librarian Emerita status at the annual Founders' Day Honors Convocation at the University of Central Florida. Emeritus status is a high honor conferred on retired or retiring faculty who are full professor, university librarian, associate professor, or associate librarian rank. Faculty must have made major professional contributions while at UCF, remained active after retirement, achieved eminence so that the title Emeritus will be an honor to the individual and the university, and been voted to receive the honor by their peers. Phyllis' career spans over 30 years with the UCF Libraries. During that time, she held positions in circulation, cataloging, online searching, and reference. She played a strong role in the formative years of bibliographic instruction programs in the state and was one of the first chairs of the Florida Library Association's Caucus on Library Orientation and Bibliographic Instruction (LOBI) as well as numerous ALA, ACRL, and Southeastern Library Association activities. Perhaps Phyllis is best known for her important work in Florida's collective bargaining process in higher education with the United Faculty of Florida. She has served UFF in many different capacities, from UCF Chapter President of UFF (1987-89) to the statewide UFF Chief Negotiator (1984-1986), finishing her union activities as a UCF Bargaining Team Member from 2003-2005. She served on the Orange County Library System Board of Directors from 2000-2002. Currently, she is working on the archives of the history of UFF and other Florida archives.

Exhibits and Other Library Sponsored Events

"The Making of a Zuckerbäcker: Apprenticeship and Tools of an Austrian Pastry Baker" is the current exhibit at the Universal Orlando Library at the Rosen College for Hospitality Management. The exhibit invites visitors to travel back in time to learn about the apprenticeship of a pastry chef in 1950's Austria, to a time of baking with the hands and with traditional tools, to a time of careful methods and delicate pastries - of a sort to be found today in only the finest European pastry shops. The items on display are on loan from Dr. Wilfried Iskat (Adjunct Instructor, Hospitality Management), who completed a traditional baking internship in Austria from 1954-1957 and later worked as a Zuckerbäcker – literally, a "sugar baker" – in the world-famous Demel pastry shop in Vienna.

In January, 2006, the UCF Libraries hosted a C-SPAN "Book TV" Bus Visit. Around 100 students, faculty, and staff toured the 45-foot long custom mobile television production studio. The "Book TV" Bus travels the country promoting Book TV's unique non-fiction programming, which airs every weekend on C-SPAN2. Several students were interviewed and asked to recommend great non-fiction books for college students. The event showcased the Libraries' services and resources in addition to books authored by UCF faculty.

The Libraries and the UCF African-American Studies Program are co-sponsoring "Connecting the Community: Maitland and Eatonville," a series of exhibits and events built around the Maitland Art Center's traveling exhibit "Connecting Andre Smith and Zora Neale Hurston: Maitland and Eatonville as Joining Communities." This culturally diverse and educational exhibition features 12 paintings by the Maitland Art Center's founder, visionary artist and architect Andre Smith (1880-1959). The paintings depict Eatonville in the 1930's and 40's, and are accompanied by text panels of Eatonville folklore and photographs. It explores the relationship between these two artists, their creative endeavors, and their respective communities.

The UCF Libraries will be hosting the third annual MLIS Information Day on Monday, May 8, 2006.  "Professional Presentation" is the focus of this year's event. One session will feature a moderated discussion of "Resumes, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." The other session will include two mock interviews. When signing up for MLIS Information Day 2006, participants will be able to enter the competition to be chosen for one of the two "interviewee" slots by submitting a cover letter online. There will be more information on this process on the website, which will be up by the beginning of April.
