Dear FACRL members,

Another exciting year is beginning and FACRL is planning several events that we hope will be of interest to all academic librarians.

First, mark your calendars to attend the Florida Library Association Annual Conference May 5-8 in Orlando. FACRL is sponsoring fourteen programs, including two preconference workshops that have special importance to academic librarians. Topics range from copyright issues to Web 2.0 to digitization projects to outreach. A variety of interesting and intellectually stimulating presentations specifically oriented to the interests of academic librarians are being sponsored by the Academic Libraries Member Group/FACRL.

In addition to the FLA program, please consider attending the FACRL Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 5, 4-6pm in the Dade Room. The board meeting is open to everyone. And to foster more networking opportunities for academic librarians during the conference, FACRL is hosting a Happy Hour on Wednesday, May 6, at 5pm in the Spritz Bar. This is your chance to meet and mingle with other academic librarians. Stop by for a beverage and snack after a long day of conference programs.

Last fall, FACRL members enjoyed a wonderful visit to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville for the FACRL Fall Program, “Proving Your Worth and Adding Value to Your Institution” held on November 7th. Over 55 attendees from across the state enjoyed a day-long program, as well as a tour and reception at the beautiful Thomas G. Carpenter Library.

Our next Fall Program will be on October 30th, at Rollins College in Winter Park. “Blurring Boundaries: The Future of Library Cooperation in the 21st Century” is the program theme. This is your opportunity to share exciting projects and ideas related to resource sharing, interlibrary loan, physical resource management, digitization projects, and open source developments with your colleagues. Please consider submitting a proposal for the program. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 1, 2009. For further information see: http://facrl.fcla.edu/programs/Fall2009Program/callpresentations2009.pdf.

Also, online voting will begin soon for open officer positions on the FACRL Board. Nominations are open until April 8th. Online voting will begin on Monday, April 13 and run for two weeks.  Members will be notified by e-mail and via the FACRL Web site in advance of the voting period. We currently have two nominations:

  • Dave Whisenant for Vice President/President Elect
  • Linda Sobey for Treasurer
Biographies and a statement of interest for each candidate can be found at: http://facrl.fcla.edu/elections/election2009.html.

And finally, the board wishes to express its utmost appreciation to these board members who will complete their terms of office this spring: Betsy Simpson, University of Florida; Mary Faulkner, Edison College; Sheri Brown, Florida Community College at Jacksonville; and Nancy Cook, Florida Institute of Technology. Betsy has served as President and Past President, Mary Faulkner has served as Treasurer, Nancy has served as newsletter editor, and Sheri Brown has been a very active member of the board since 2006.

With their departure comes an opportunity for you! If you have an interest in serving as an FACRL Board member, please contact any current member of the FACRL Board. FACRL is a very active, vital organization with a proven record of having fun while serving the needs of academic librarians. I hope you will consider joining in and continuing the traditions.

Elizabeth Killingsworth
President, FACRL
