Kronen Awarded NEA Grant


Steve Kronen

West Campus Faculty Librarian Steve Kronen was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Steve is the author of two books of poetry, Empirical Evidence (1992) and Splendor (2006). His work has also appeared in The New Republic, Poetry, The American Scholar, The Paris Review, and the online magazine Slate. He has been a fellow at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and was awarded the Cecil Hemley Award from the Poetry Society of America. Programs Promote Library Services

The North Campus Library is actively involved with a new project called Say It Now! that promotes library services at special events on campus. Students share and record their thoughts about campus events that are later uploaded as videos and podcasts to iTunesU. This is being done in conjunction with librarian Erin Fennell’s Library-On-The-Fly, a program that allows students to check out books at events on campus. Both programs have been very successful.

Library Matters Episodes

A group from the North Campus library, led by Assistant Library Director Valda Adeyiga, teamed up with librarians from Medical Campus, FIU, and Miami-Dade County to produce three new of episodes of the MDC TV program Library Matters this semester.

Medical Campus Library Director Elisa Abella discussed health information literacy with Faculty Librarian Carla Clark and Dr. Patricia Lassiter, Professor of Health Sciences & Related Studies.

North Campus Assistant Library Director Theo Karantsalis interviewed Miami-Dade County Urban Affairs librarian Julio Granda about researching techniques and green technologies.

North Campus Faculty Librarian Deborah Keeler, Ed.D., led a discussion about the library’s use of GIS with FIU librarian Jill Uhrovic, and the use of GPS with Theo Karantsalis.

The episodes are currently shown on weekends at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on channel 78 in Miami-Dade County.

Hime Attends FACC Workshop

Kendall Campus Faculty Librarian Laurie Hime attended the Florida Association of Community Colleges Learning Resources  Spring Library Workshop in Ocala on Friday, Feb. 27.

MDC Campus Transfers

Beth Cloues is the newest member of the InterAmerican Campus (IAC) Library family.  Beth transferred to IAC in early February after working for 20 years as a Faculty Librarian at North Campus, also in Miami Dade College.  Beth has a B.A. in French from Kentucky Wesleyan College and an MSLS from Florida State University.  She will continue to hold her rank of Associate Professor Senior as she continues to expand her teaching responsibilities at IAC.

Faculty Librarian Steve Kronen has just joined the newest campus at Miami Dade College, West Campus.  Steve will be in charge of developing new collections for this library and also work in the implementation of Information Literacy credit courses and instruction programs.  Steve comes from the Kendall Campus Library where he previously worked for 1 ˝ years.  He is also a poet who just received an NEA grant.  Steve has an MLIS from the University of South Florida.

Kendall Campus Faculty Librarian Jenny Saxton gave a presentation on her library’s iPod Project at the Winter Quarterly Meeting of the Palm Beach County Library Association on January 14, 2009. Erick Dominicis, Director of the InterAmerican and West Campus Libraries, gave a presentation entitled “The Challenges and Adventures of Preparing for the Global Classroom: College Instruction in Spanish” at Miami Dade College’s annual Conference Day on March 5, 2009.

Also presenting on Conference Day was Kendall Campus Faculty Librarian Jenny Saxton, who conducted a session entitled “The Poor Man’s Web 2.0: Free Tools to Get You Started.”
