As we continue into another year, we look forward to your participating in several activities of professional interest and value. Most of you will already have received information about the upcoming fall workshop. It will take place on October 24, 2003 at the Holiday Inn Select Orlando International Airport. The theme is Professional Pizazz and the workshop will address issues including publishing, promotion, tenure and mentoring. Special thanks to the task force on mentoring who freely volunteered their time and shared their knowledge. Because of their contributions, we were able to include mentoring as a topic in the program.

We are pleased to bring you an excellent team of presenters, drawn from our colleagues across the state. We are also excited that Larry Hardesty, Director of the Austin College Abell Library Center, has graciously accepted our invitation to address the workshop. He was named 2001 Academic/Research Librarian of the Year by ACRL. Earlier in his outstanding career, he served as chair of the FACRL chapter. Details about the workshop are posted at http://facrl.fcla.edu.

We were happy with the turnout for the Spring Workshop, Joint-Use Libraries: Promise & Prospects, which took place on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at Lake Buena Vista during the FLA 80th Annual Conference. The event was a collaborative effort between the Academic and Public Libraries Sections. Comments from attendees indicated that they left with practical suggestions for facing problems of scarce resources for library buildings and operating expenses. Presenters included Debra Austin, newly appointed Florida Chancellor of Colleges and Universities, and Don Riggs, University Librarian at Nova Southeastern University.

Cynthia Kisby, our Vice Chair, has been working hard at coordinating the FACRL Spring Workshop, Marketing Is Your Library’s Voice. It will take place at the FLA Annual Conference, March 22- 24, 2004, at the Adams Mark Hotel in Daytona Beach. The conference theme is Vibrant Voices, Vital Libraries.

We will, of course, continue to collaborate with ACRL in implementing its strategic plans, including the current initiative on membership. For example, our planned workshops support ACRL 2003-2004 President’s Theme: Partnerships and Connections: The Learning Community as Knowledge Builders. I also invite you to visit www.acrl.org/e-learning for current details about the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education and Scholarly Communication Initiative. This includes an announcement about the online seminar this Fall, (ACRL/TLT) Best Practices in Information Literacy in Undergraduate Education. A third area would be for us to work in closer collaboration with other state chapters, through the national office of ACRL.

Finally, all of us on the executive board of the Chapter, and the members at-large, thank Tina for her guiding influence and tireless enthusiasm while she served as our President.

I hope to see you all in Orlando on October 24, 2003.

Mervyn Solomon, President
Miami-Dade Community College
