Welcome to a new academic year for the Florida Chapter of ACRL. The Chapter is finishing a strong year in that our two major programs were well attended and received favorable evaluations from members. From the suggestions offered by the membership, the Board of Directors reviewed a list of topics and decided to focus on digitization projects in Florida. I think you all will be as surprised and pleased as I was to learn about all the wonderful and various undertakings in digitizing materials and providing access that are going on around the state. We have two exciting and knowledgeable speakers from outside Florida and colleagues from around the state currently involved in their own efforts. We hope you will enjoy and learn from this power-packed program.

On an individual note, I was so impressed and inspired by a presentation at our Fall Workshop 2000, that I came back to my library and started up a smaller version of a project that was presented at that workshop on wireless use in libraries. Perhaps you will be similarly influenced to investigate a digitization project for your library.

Digitization is an issue that has captured a lot of attention, not to mention grants, over the last few years. Our speakers will address the many issues that arise when libraries, museums, and other institutions plan such projects. We will hear about Etext at the University of Virginia from Dr. David Seaman, copyright considerations from Dr. Laura N. Gasaway, how to market your digital collections, and the effects of such collections on your library and staff.

Here is a the list of sites that will be spotlighted in the Fall Workshop.

Our Spring Program "Keeping Up - How do you do it?", as part of the Florida Library Association conference in Kissimmee, drew a large crowd with complimentary and instructive evaluations. We apologize for the fullness of the room, but it was gratifying to have your response. Your suggestions for programming are enthusiastically considered by the Board.

We hope to see you all at FLA in April 2002 and in Orlando on October 19, 2001.

Sarah Johnson, President
