Why Electronic?

This is the second issue of the newsletter published only in an electronic format. As Kathleen Cohen said in the last edition, "We would like to say we are trying this as a new adventure in information dissemination, but in reality the chapter budget can no longer bear the increasing costs of printing and postage."

The first electronic issue didn't generate too much hostility, in fact it was greeted enthusiastically. One advantage is that newsletter editor Barbara Tuck can add/edit up to almost the last minute - and make corrections instantly!

The new academic year also brings in a new program year for the Florida Chapter of ACRL. Since the Board couldn't decide on one single topic for a workshop, this fall the Board presents you with a smorgasbord of interesting topics of concern to all of us who work in academic libraries. All the presenters are colleagues from around the state, and I hope you enjoy this day long program.

It was good to see so many of you show up for our early morning program at the Florida Library Association Conference in Tampa in April. Your evaluations were very complimentary, so I guess everyone managed to stay awake!

In August I spent a week with other academic librarians at a Harvard leadership conference. All across the country, things are bubbling in academic libraries: new buildings, growing collections in both print and electronic, burgeoning enrollments, hiring new graduates and retiring veterans, and new modes of information delivery. As always, academic libraries are exciting places to work. Send us your ideas for new programs so we can all share the excitement.

I hope to see you all in Cocoa Beach on October 27!

Kathleen Cohen, President
