Little did I know that when I wrote this column last fall, extolling the
excitement of change in libraries, that we Florida librarians would be
faced with such an avalanche of changes, all at one time! As I am sure
you all know by now, the effects of the Education Reorganization Task
Force will be far reaching for the librarians and libraries in the State
University System and the Community College System, and for the private
academic libraries as well. In addition, continued funding for services
upon which we rely daily, such as that provided by the multi-type library
consortia and the Distance Learning Library Initiative (FirstSearch and
courier services), is uncertain. Not only do we need to provide the ways
for our patrons to find information, we all need to stay informed ourselves
about these issues.
The October
workshop in Cocoa Beach was a great success; the smorgasbord approach
incited everyone's brainpans to work overtime. I received many great suggestions
for future programs, and the Board hopes to implement many of them in
the future. Speaking of the future, I hope to see you all at FLA Conference;
the Academic Section program is on April
11 at 2 p.m.; ironically the program's title is "Keeping UpHow
Do You Do It?"
