News from the FieldFlorida International UniversityPeople: Papers, Publications, PresentationsValerie Edwards Boulos (Head, Resource Development) coordinated the poster session presentations at the “Digital Reference @Your Library II: Directions and Opportunities” pre-conference presented by the Machine Assisted Reference Services division of the Reference and User Services Association, ALA Toronto. She also participated in the “working group” that selected the poster sessions. Lauren Christos (Reference Librarian) sat on a presentation panel for Dr. Laurence Miller, representing the University Libraries, the American Library Association, and the Intellectual Freedom Roundtable Committee, at a USA Patriot Act Town Hall meeting held at FIU. Dan Hardin (Music Librarian) recently served as consultant to Northside United Methodist Church, Atlanta, concerning renovations to the church’s M.P. Moeller pipe organ. He was also continuo organist for a performance of Bach’s Magnificat, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Coral Gables. Catherine Marsicek (Latin American and Caribbean Information Services Librarian) and Vicki Silvera (Head, Special Collections) presented a panel entitled “Library of the Caribbean: A Cooperative Digital Library,” at the 22nd Annual Conference on West Indian Literature. Catherine Marsicek convened a meeting of Latin American Studies Librarians of the Latin American Southeast Regional Libraries, at a recent Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials conference, to discuss cooperative collection development strategies between the institutions. George Pearson (Reference Librarian) made a presentation on Japanese animation and manga at the West Kendall (Miami) Regional Library. Vicki Silvera (Head Special Collections) spoke on “Archiving Black Culture in Florida—the FIU Experience” at the Florida: The State of Black Studies and African Diaspora Peoples Conference, May 1-3, 2003, at the Broward County African-American Research Library & Cultural Center, co-sponsored by FIU, African New World Studies. Susan Weiss (Reference Librarian) presented a paper at the Art Libraries Society of North America conference in Baltimore: “The Relationship between the Wolfsonian [Museum] and Florida International University.” People: State/National ActivitiesDr. Laurence Miller (Executive Director, University Libraries) is Chair, Ethics Committee, Association of College and Research Libraries, and has been elected to the Executive Board of the Florida Library Association. | |
