People: State/National Activities

Stephanie Brenenson (Coordinator of Library Instruction, UP) spoke about the Library's collaboration with the Academy for the Art of Teaching in developing and presenting half day information literacy workshops for faculty. The presentation, entitled "Improving Student Learning Through Faculty Development," was made at the Association of College and Research Libraries' 10th National Conference in mid-March. In addition, Ms. Brenenson spoke on a panel at the Florida Library Association on the topic "Putting Information Literacy Standards to Work". In addition, she was elected to become vice chair of FLA's Information Literacy Interest Group beginning in July 2001.

Antonie B. Downs (Associate Director of Libraries) was invited to be a member of the SACS Reaffirmation Committee for George Mason University and visited the campus in April.

Minnie Dunbar, Valerie Edwards and Suzanne Stemler (Reference Librarians) presented a paper on "Students as Co-Partners for Information Literacy and Instruction" at the ACRL Annual Conference in March.

Valerie Edwards (Electronic Information Services Librarian) presented a session entitled "Using Library Resources to Enhance Your Web-Enhanced Course" at the Mid-South Instructional Technology Conference in April.

Doug Hasty (Head, Access Services) had the article "Student Assistants as Library Ambassadors: An Academic Library's Public Relations Initiative" published in Technical Services Quarterly, 2000. He was promoted to University Librarian.

Marjorie Beary (Health Sciences Librarian) and Suzanne Stemler (Reference Librarian and member of the Health Sciences instruction team) attended the Medical Library Association national conference in Orlando (May 25-30) and participated in professional development workshops while there.

Nancy Hershoff (Head of Bibliographic Control Department, BBC) was appointed to ALA, ALCTS' Acquisitions Nominating Committee and FLA's Scholarship Committee. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors of the Chinese American Librarians Association, ALA LAMA's Cultural Diversity Committee, and ALA ALCTS's International Relations Committee.

Catherine Marsicek (LACIC Librarian) has been asked to serve on the ACRL International Relations Committee from 2001-2003.

Robert Mead-Donaldson (Cataloger, UP) served as a consultant to the FAU Library's cataloging department in the reclassification of videorecordings.

George Pearson and Lauren Christos (Reference Librarians) attended ALA in San Francisco. Pearson is the Program Committee Chair of the Intellectual Freedom Round Table, and Christos is a committee member. The program featured David Brin, author of The Transparent Society, which deals with the controversial issue of freedom versus privacy.
