News from the Field Florida International University People: Appointments, Departures, Promotions Catherine Marsicek is the new Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Information Center. She received her Master of Library Science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Ibero-American Studies and International Relations from the University of Wisconsin. Patricia Pereira-Pujol has been appointed Reference Librarian. She received her B.S. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her M.A. in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida. Patricia Iannuzzi, Head of Reference, accepted the position of Associate Director of Libraries at the University of California at Berkeley. Kate Holvoet, Government Documents Information Specialist, is the new Documents Librarian at the University of Utah. Vicki Grahame, Head of Cataloging, is the new Head of Cataloging at the University of California/Irvine. North Campus Library recently lost three librarians just at the beginning of their professional careers. Sylvia Pinzon left for MDCC to assume an administrative position. David Goldsmith accepted a promotion to Head of Resource Development at the Green Library at University Park. Sherry Crowther returned to her native Canada to continue her professional career. People: Papers, Publications, Presentations Stephanie Brenenson taught Basic Information Sources and Services for the University of South Florida's School of Library and Information Science during the Fall 1990 semester. She plans to teach it again in the Fall of 2000. Minnie Dunbar, Valerie Edwards and Suzanne Stemler gave a presentation entitled "Successful Partnerships for Information Literacy and Library Instruction: Co-producing with Students", at the conference Information Strategies for the Next Century. The conference was held in Ft. Myers in March 2000. Scott Kass served as a member of the Information Strategies Conference Committee. Jennifer Fu did an electronic poster for the 1999 International Crime Mapping Conference that took place in December 1999 in Orlando. The electronic poster session involved mapping out retrospective crime data of selected neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Nancy Hershoff was appointed chair of the ALA ALCTS Acquisitions Technology Committee 1999-2000. She also chairs the Chinese American Librarians Association's Scholarship Committee 1999-2000, and serves on the ALA LAMA Cultural Diversity Committee (1999-2000), and the ALA ALCTS International Relations Committee (Intern, 1999-2000). Susan Weiss organized and presented a workshop for SEFLIN on "Local Documents in Your Library" in September 1999. In March 1999 she was interviewed on WLRN, the Miami Public Radio station. On the program "Tropical Currents" she discussed her book Miami Bibliography. Laurence Miller, Executive Director of Libraries, chaired meetings of the Intellectual Freedom Round Table and the Intellectual Freedom Committee/Association of the College and Research Libraries at the ALA Midwinter Conference in San Antonio. During Midwinter, the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee endorsed the ACRL/IFC-developed statement, "Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries", and the document is slated for inclusion in the 2000 edition of the Intellectual Freedom Manual, published by ALA, as an interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights for Academic Libraries. News from the Field: Acquisitions, Programs, Services The FIU Libraries recently inaugurated a new Latin American and Caribbean Information Center (LACIC). It is a state-of-the-art facility designed to serve the university and library communities specializing in the regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. The FIU Libraries commemorated World AIDS Day on December 1, 1999, with a series of events culminating in a presentation to Mrs. Lilliam Penela, wife of Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penela. She received the first annual FIU World AIDS Day award. Dr. Laurence Miller announced a new "FIU Comprehensive Community AIDS Partnership" at a luncheon in the library prior to the presentation. Buildings Turner Construction recently received the Eagle Award for excellence in construction for the addition to the Green Library at University Park. The award is given by the Gold Coast Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors. |
