CCLA and TBLC to partner in Live Virtual Reference Service project

CCLA and TBLC have announced a partnership to develop and deliver live virtual reference services for all community college libraries and select TBLC member libraries. The service, funded in part by an LSTA grant administered by the State Library of Florida, will serve as a pilot program designed to provide the Florida Library Network Council (FLNC) with information about cost, procedures, and operations for a virtual reference service component of a larger Florida Virtual Library to serve all Florida citizens.

The virtual reference service will offer online help services that provide library patrons with fast, convenient access to a library professional who can offer one-on-one online interaction and teaching sessions for navigating Web-based resources. The librarian will be able to link with the patron to see what the patron sees, provide instruction using a live chat session, help the patron locate information, and provide professional guidance on how to use that information-all in a real-time, interactive, virtual environment. Initial implementation of the service is anticipated for spring 2003.

Planning for LINCC Aleph continues

Preparation for conversion of all community college libraries to Ex Libris' Aleph library management system continues. Planned for December 2003 activation, Aleph will replace the legacy DRA-based LINCC system at 70 community college campus libraries statewide. Ongoing activities include performance testing of data converted from the legacy LINCC to the new LINCC Aleph, training of key CCLA staff on the configuration and operation of Aleph subsystems, and CCLA's development of consultation and training programs for library staff.

New Web-based course added

CCLA recently released its second Web-based course to all community college LINCC library staff. The course, Acquisitions - Selection Lists, is part of CCLA's comprehensive library staff education program, LINCCLearn, and provides instruction on using LINCC to create selection lists of items for recommended purchase. LINCCLearn's Web-based courses offer community college libraries the flexibility of self-paced, just-in-time learning for new and reassigned staff, and serve to augment CCLA's traditional instructor-led LINCC training.

Community college librarians can access LINCCLearn at: www.ccla.lib.fl.us/learn/lincclearn.asp.

New library staff resources

CCLA recently added two new resources to its Web site designed to help library staff develop and administer local library programs. The first is a new Web page that provides tools and information for planning, implementing, and assessing local institutions' Information Literacy programs. The page includes materials on competency standards and guidelines, best practices, curriculum, tutorials, assessments, and other related topics. www.ccla.lib.fl.us/resources/infolit/infolit.asp.

The second new resource is a Handout Exchange page that allows community college libraries to share locally developed tutorials, bibliographic, and other instructional materials online. Using the Handout Exchange, library staff can gain ideas and tips on developing new materials, upload their library's new materials for sharing, delete out-of-date materials, and keep their online materials current. www.ccla.lib.fl.us/resources/infolit/handoutexchange.asp.
